I would recommend this book for those who are just starting to learn Spanish, or are coming back to it after a long absence: the Spanish is easy, while not being geared for a learner.
Your dictionary will choke on some of the Mexican slang, but for the most part the situation is not out of control.
As for the story itself, there are some interesting ideas, though the author's ditziness certainly comes through on every page. However, if you're just looking for the language practice...

This was my first book by Laura Esquivel.... it is one of the best and most interesting books I've read....and I'm a bookworm. I read it in spanish...this ;book is profound, innovative and funny. it is extremely well written. I read it in the early 2000... I did not read Like water for chocolate... but I saw the movie... and really La Ley del Amor .. IS MUCH BETTER.
One of Esquivel's best! It's a rare occurrence in the Spanish language to find intelligently discoursed science fiction, as a matter of fact, to find ANY quality of science fiction as it seems that the Spanish literary world is quite contented with the accomplishment of magical realism and wouldn't go further than that. This novel and it's "multimedia" format is a courageously ambitious undertaking for a writer that, in Latin American terms and scope, had nothing to prove and much to loose. If Esquivel was less of an artist, with a true artists no holds barred hunger for expression, she would have come up with some kind of a sequel to "Like Water for Chocolate", but she took it to trail blaze in an obscure theme for Spanish letters. With an accompanying CD, to boot.
I sincerely advise Anglo readers to evaluate this novel in the context in which it was written and to also consider that Esquivel didn't cut through the easy way of staying her characters within a "first world" ambiance and situations,but, in my opinion, achieved a real Latin American science fiction novel, with true-blue Latino characters, moving through an unmistakeable Latino plot. A real first, I would adventure, to say nothing of the beautiful, truly felt musical accompaniment.
Always loved this book since the first time I've read the story 2 years ago. It's captivating, inspiring! I'll give it 5 stars but did not receive it in English as anticipated. Greatful to know it's being sold.

Este libro me decepcionó. La historia, aunque pudo ser interesante y divertida, me resultó aburrida. La señora Esquivel trata de llevarnos en un viaje cósmico inverosímil y confuso donde los personajes continúan cambiando su físico y sus capacidades. El concepto, que parece interesante se convierte en una burda caricatura.
Si tienes oportunidad de leer el libro, compralo! De facil lectura...
Una forma diferente de leer, contiene un CD que te permite escuchar canciones que se relacionan con el texto y hacer que el sentido del oido también se active.
El libro dice que viene con un CD el cual no venía incluido. Esta novela de Laura Esquivel es muy buena pero el CD es muy importante para poder disfrutarla totalmente. Cómo hago para conseguirlo?
